Biography

Tammy Welson Smith has appeared in short films, winning Best Film at the Lake Worth Film Festival, and had a leading role in a commercial for the Downtown Boca Film Festival produced by Black Onyx Productions. Willing to suffer for her art, when cast in a leading role in a film by Wael Elsedeki and The Palm Beach Film School, she even allowed the short ‘slasher’ film, The Psychic, to be filmed in her home. “All I needed for the motivation to let out a blood-curdling scream was to think about how the make-believe blood was staining my grout!” says Tammy. Last New Year’s Eve she entertained the City of Delray Beach for “First Night” performing retro hits at The Crest Theatre with her ‘little band with a big sound’.

Tammy began performing at the age of two in her living room in Miami Beach, singing the soundtrack from Thoroughly Modern Millie, Cabaret, and Hair. While attending high school at North Miami Beach Senior High, and being cast in many leading and supporting roles in plays such as A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Cabaret, and Line by Israel Horovitz, Tammy decided she wanted to pursue a career in theatre. Tammy’s dad, Buddy Burden, was the keyboardist with The Interludes, the house band at Turnberry Isle. Tammy sang with the band at Turnberry and The Fontainebleau hotel, only seventeen years old and dressed up to look at least...twenty!

The Theatre Department of University of Miami opened its arms to Tammy. However, when curriculum dictated she had to sew costumes, she quickly transferred over to Communications, Film and TV Production Department. But when it came time for Tammy to fulfill her dream of going to New York to be an actress, her parents insisted their retail jewelry store Fantasia Jewels in the Aventura Mall was the best ‘role’ for her.

Tammy happily sold, designed, and manufactured jewelry and performed all aspects of managing her family’s successful store, becoming a GIA Graduate Gemologist. “I hardly gave another thought to my love of working in theatre until very recently. Through Facebook, I reconnected with all my old friends I had lost touch with and saw so many of them having achieved fabulous careers in the arts! I was inspired, so I jumped back in! It’s never too late!”

Tammy lives in Wellington, FL with her husband and three sons. She pursues her theatre and film career while managing her busy family. She directed The Wizard of Oz for the Gala at the Milagro Center (a non-profit organization). She also dedicates her time to volunteering for great causes. She wrote and directed a Purim Spiel for the synagogue in her town and she was a finalist in the Wellington Idol singing competition that aired on local TV.

She wrote her first full-length screenplay, a hilarious film, Murder at Upminster K, a mystery that takes place in a South Florida retirement condo community.
